Cord Blood Banking: A Necessity For Your ChildCord Blood Banking: A Necessity For Your Child

In the few recent years, there has been an increase in the awareness over how cord blood is indispensable for your newborn child and how preservation of it which is commonly known as cord blood banking can help them later in life if some unfortunate disease or the other is to strike them. In case you feel a tad confused, cord blood is essentially the blood in your baby’s umbilical cord and comprises stem cells which ultimately develop into organs, tissues and even blood vessels.

Cord blood banking is the latest revolution in the medical industry where the blood from your newborn’s umbilical cord along with the placenta is taken and stored away for future medical use. This is done because the blood in the umbilical cord has what is known as stem cells which have many life saving properties. These are however different from embryonic stem cells.  Stem cells are known to be able to reproduce themselves as well turn into other cells as well. The stem cells found in the umbilical cord are known as hematopoietic progenitor cells or HPCs.

It is done immediately after the birth of the baby. It is painless and is done basically as easy as clamping the umbilical cord and collecting the cord blood by inserting a needle into the vein of the cord which is still attached to the placenta. This blood is collected into a collection bag and is taken to either a private or a public blood bank that you might have selected.
